Best Places to Live: Lake Saint Louis, MO

Located near the intersection of I-64 and I-70, Lake Saint Louis is one of the area’s most sought-after places to live in the St. Louis/St. Charles metropolitan area. Residents are inexplicably drawn to its large lakes, five parks, three golf courses, outstanding shopping, dining and entertainment venues, and excellent health care facilities.

The development of 600-acre, man-made Lake Saint Louis and the surrounding area began in 1961 as a private weekend getaway destination named “Harbor Town.” However, because the original investors lacked adequate financing and business experience, the development company was foreclosed on in 1966.

In 1967, one of the secondary investors, R. T. Crow, bought the other developers out and instead of just a weekend community, he decided to build a new city. Later that year, St. Charles County approved the preliminary plan, and the second lake, 85-acre Lake Saint Louise, opened in 1969.

The city was officially incorporated by the State of Missouri in 1975, and in 1977, the name was changed to “Lake Saint Louis.” Today, it has a population of approximately 16,000 and has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA” for doing its part in promoting a greener city.
